From 1532 until the end of the Ancien Re´gime, deans in the Zurich church were accorded prominent leadership competencies as compared to their colleagues. Shared responsibility had always been emphasized so that the deans functioned as role models and held the position of primus inter pares. Notwithstanding, from the times of Heinrich Bullinger and through the synod with its Zensur, they were provided with instruments of leadership, including supervision and visitation, and served the Zurich Church and state as disciplinary agents. Since the 19th century introduction of church oversight committees of the secondary level called Bezirkskirchenpflege, the increased organizational autonomy of the parishes, and the reorganization of the synod, deans were progressively released from leadership responsibilities.Downloads
